Our MissionOur Mission

In The Black's initial mission was to protect friends and family from the massive declines that struck the markets beginning in March 2009 and which now  appear to have run their course. With the market’s significant rise off the March 2009 lows, things appear to have come full circle, providing all of us a bit of breathing room and opportunity.

With the return to some sense of normalcy we have adopted an new mission: to teach investors and traders how to identify and understand investment opportunities using technical analytical techniques. We work to accomplish this mission by producing a combination of live, recorded and printed content, each targeting a certain type of investor.

What we doWhat we do

We produce several products seeking to serve many types of investors.

We produce two types of newsletters, daily and weekly. The daily Newsletters are produced in a video format and focus on the  market's technical data  that occurred during the trading day and how things are setting up for the next trading day or days. Our weekend letter is text based and examines the technical market action from a longer-term perspective. We examine the weekly and monthly  data and discuss the trades that are setting up for the week. Daily video newsletters are approximately 15 to 20 minutes long and are available to be viewed via our website 24 hours a day. More information on our newsletter content and subscriptions can be found on the newsletter home page.

The Trading Desk is our all day, live webinar where Rob shares his charts and identifies trades as they are forming. It is a blend of desktop sharing, audio broadcast and chat throughout the entire trading day. The sessions start 30 minutes prior to the open of the NYSE and NASDAQ and run until 5 minutes after the close. It is geared for active traders who are very comfortable in a fast paced, highly technical environment and are well versed in chart patterns and technical analysis vocabulary. It is not meant for novice investors as there is very little instruction on what chart patterns mean. Users need to know how to trade stocks and options, both on the long and short side.  It a free form  fast pase format where  everyone participates. If you are interested and would like to try it out, please contact us for a complimentary day pass.

Our Chart House is our repository where we post charts of stocks exhibiting trade-able patterns. The chart-house is available to subscribers at any level.

Our Strategy Sessions are adhoc live webinars that take place on Sunday's for 1 to 2 hours. They are geared towards novice and expert traders/investors and is a research and planning session for the upcoming trading week. They are not regularly scheduled, but users who are interested are notified by email when one has been scheduled.

All of our for fee products come with a 100% money back guarantee.

Who we areWho we are

Rob at NYSE

Rob Smith is a Chicago based veteran of the financial markets. He began by working his high school and college summers on both the Chicago Board Options and Chicago Stock Exchanges, and by 1989 became full time. During his 16 year stint as a member of the Chicago Stock Exchange, Rob worked as an independent trader as well as both an OTC and listed specialist. He was a regular contributor to CBS affiliate WBBM radio's noon business hour and evening drive programs as well as itsaboutfinance.com.

During those years he also served as a technical adviser to several firms using his bottom up approach to technical analysis. This "Bottom Up" approach, combines the use of several well known and proprietary indicators used to review a universe of well over 700 stocks a day. While others may use software to search for certain conditions, Rob's belief that exposure to the charts is far more beneficial. He routinely reviews his universe of stocks individually each night, on the belief that this exposure enables him to achieve the absolute best overall understanding of present market conditions.

In 2008, Rob recognized the severity of the bear market to come. He began to call and email anyone that would listen that this was not going to be "Your father's bear market." By October, he took it upon himself to do it full time and the "In The Black" newsletter was born. From the grass roots beginning of emailing everyone in his address book and spending well over 12 hours a day fielding questions, "In The Black" has now become a staple in the arsenal of hundreds of traders daily. Although geared towards the active trader, the original mission of helping people understand the risks of their investments, how to minimize those risks through the use of options and other strategies, and to educate through the use of daily examples, still exists in the newsletter Today. Rob takes great pride in being extremely accessible for any and all questions that you may have.
